In Assamese society, proverbs and sayings have been very popular for a long time. Many of these proverbs give us real lessons about life. One such proverb is: “Having a cow but not ploughing with it is better to have none than to keep it idle.” The inner meaning of this proverb is—if a valuable thing is not used, then having it or not having it makes no difference.
If we look at the life of rural farmers, the cow is extremely important. Without cows, a village farmer seems incomplete. The cow is deeply connected with the farmer’s life. To plough the field and to cultivate crops, the cow is a priceless possession. But if a farmer has cows and does not use them for ploughing or any useful work, then the cow becomes useful for nothing. It does not bring any real economic gain. In this way, even a valuable animal becomes wasteful if not properly used.
The meaning of this proverb is not limited only to cows and farmers. In our society, many people have valuable possessions—sometimes wealth, sometimes knowledge, sometimes special skills. But if these are not used at the right place and the right time, they have no real value. Unless wealth, wisdom, or talent is applied for personal progress or the welfare of society, it remains meaningless.
In our society, there are many rich people. They keep their wealth locked in storage or buried in the ground, but never use it to help the poor. As a result, while some people in the same society die of hunger, piles of treasure remain unused in safes or warehouses. This does not benefit society; instead, it perpetuates injustice.
We also see such examples in government. Many schemes and plans are introduced with great excitement. However, after a short time, these plans often come to a halt or remain incomplete. This only causes wastage of money and does not benefit the common people.
From all these examples, it becomes clear that—if resources are not used, then having them is useless. In fact, it is better not to have them than to waste them.
Through this proverb, our society gives us a great lesson—any possession, knowledge, or resource has true value only when it is applied at the right time and in the right place. Otherwise, it is equal to nothing. 0 0 0
